5 Tips for Planning a Waterfront Wedding

A waterfront wedding is a dream for many couples. Before choosing your venue and making the date, make sure you know what to look for in your venue.

1. Check the Tide Charts

If your waterfront venue is on the ocean as opposed to a lake, then check for tide times before you schedule your ceremony time. Depending on the beach location, low tide could be the worst time to schedule your ceremony. Not only may the water be out so far that your location is nowhere near the waves, but low tide can also have that distinct seaside odor that isn't always pleasant.

2. Make Backup Weather Plans

Weather isn't 100% predictable, and this is especially true when you are near a large body of water. You can minimize weather issues by planning for local weather patterns, but you can't be completely sure that there won't be rain or wind. Choose a waterfront venue that provides tent services for bad weather or even one that has an indoor option with a water view for the off chance that the weather is too bad to be outside.

3. Ask About Shoe Valet Services

Many waterfront venues provide shoe valet services. The valet checks guests' fancy shoes and provides them with a pair of beach sandals for the ceremony. This is especially helpful if your ceremony is on the beach but you will be retreating to an indoor or off-beach reception area afterward. Shoe valets may also have other helpful things available, like sunblock and sunglasses, which will help ensure that your guests are comfortable.

4. Request a Sound System

Being outdoors can make it harder to hear the ceremony. Add in the sound of the wind, crashing waves, and seagulls, and your guests may have no idea what is going on. Make sure the venue provides a sound system and microphones so that your guests can actually hear you and your soon-to-be spouse exchange vows. If the reception is on the beach as well, you will also need a good sound system for the music.

5. Get the Right Amenities

Certain amenities may be needed, depending on the location and the specific needs of your guests. If you have guests with mobility issues, check to see if the venue provides transportation to the site for those that can't traverse the sand. You may also need a portable toilet or a private tent for the wedding party to prepare. Your venue should provide a list of included and optional amenities to choose from.
